Good documentation is what turns a pile of observations into reproducible research. Why documentation matters

Reproducibility is the standard every serious project is measured against. What to record for every peptide

  • Compound identity – full name and sequence, so there is no ambiguity about which molecule was used.
  • Supplier and lot number – the batch a material came from, since testing is lot-specific.
  • COA reference – the certificate of analysis for that lot, including stated purity and testing method (HPLC, mass spectrometry).
  • Stated amount and net content – the labelled quantity and, where given, the net peptide content.
  • Receipt and storage – date received, storage conditions, and where the vial is kept.

What to record for every procedure

  • Date and time of each step.
  • Materials and equipment used, including solvents and volumes.
  • Exact method, written so someone else could repeat it without asking you questions.
  • Conditions such as temperature and timing.
  • Observations and results, recorded as they happen rather than reconstructed later.
  • Deviations from the plan, however minor, since these often explain unexpected outcomes.

Best practices that pay off

  • Write in real time. Notes made during the work are more accurate than anything reconstructed afterward.
  • Number and date every page or entry so the sequence is unambiguous.
  • Never overwrite. Correct with a dated note rather than deleting, so the history stays intact.
  • Link every result to a lot. This is the single habit that makes variability easy to trace.
  • Keep the COA with the record. If you cannot point to the certificate for a lot, the identity and purity behind your result are unverified.

Paper or electronic notebooks

Both bound paper notebooks and electronic lab notebooks can support rigorous documentation, and the right choice depends on your workflow.
