Common Peptide Research Mistakes to Avoid

Peptides are delicate molecules, and most of the problems people run into have nothing to do with the peptide itself and everything to do with how it was handled. Small mistakes in storage, mixing and record keeping quietly ruin material that arrived in perfect condition. Here are the most common peptide research mistakes and how to sidestep every one of them.

1. Buying without a certificate of analysis

The most expensive mistake happens before anything is even opened. Buying from a source that cannot show identity and purity data means you are guessing about what is in the vial. Insist on results from HPLC and mass spectrometry and a certificate of analysis tied to the specific lot you receive, not a generic sample.

2. Reconstituting too aggressively

Peptides are fragile. Blasting the bacteriostatic or sterile water straight down onto the powder, or shaking the vial hard to speed dissolving, can shear the molecule. Add liquid slowly down the inside wall of the vial and let it dissolve gently by swirling, never by vigorous shaking.

3. Using the wrong diluent or too much force

UV and strong light can degrade sensitive peptides. Store vials in the dark or in amber glass, and do not leave them sitting under lab lighting or on a sunny windowsill.

8. Introducing contamination

Touching stoppers, reusing needles, or working in a dusty space invites microbial and particulate contamination. Wipe stoppers, use clean equipment and keep the workspace tidy.

9. Not labelling and dating vials

An unlabelled vial is a mystery in a month. Note the compound, the reconstitution date and the concentration on every vial so you always know what you are holding and how old it is.

10. Poor concentration math
