Bacteriostatic vs Sterile Water vs Saline

Bacteriostatic water, sterile water and saline are three clear liquids that are easy to confuse and genuinely different. If you are reconstituting or diluting a compound, knowing which is which matters. This guide lays out all three side by side.

What each one actually is

  • Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with about 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. The additive inhibits bacterial growth, which lets the vial be accessed more than once over a usable window.
  • Sterile water is purified water with nothing added. It is sterile at manufacture but has no preservative, so it is intended for a single use and should be discarded once opened.
  • Saline is sterile water containing dissolved sodium chloride, most commonly at 0.9% (isotonic “normal saline”). It contains salt but, in its standard form, no bacteriostatic preservative.

The key distinctions

Two properties separate these solutions: whether they contain a preservative, and whether they contain salt.

Preservative: only bacteriostatic water has one. That is why it is the usual choice for reconstituting lyophilised peptides that will be accessed gradually, and why sterile water and saline are treated as single-use in that context.

Salt content: only saline contains sodium chloride. This makes it isotonic, meaning its salt concentration matches that of body fluids, whereas both bacteriostatic and sterile water are hypotonic. Tonicity is the property that distinguishes saline from the two pure-water options.

When each is used

  • Bacteriostatic water is favoured when a single vial of reconstituted compound will be drawn from more than once, because its preservative protects the solution between accesses.
  • Sterile water suits single reconstitution events, or cases where a preservative is specifically not wanted.
  • Saline is used where an isotonic solution is called for, such as certain dilutions or rinsing applications.

Choosing correctly

Match the solution to the job. If the vial will be reused, the benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water earns its place. If tonicity matters, saline is the only one of the three that is isotonic. If you need plain, preservative-free water for a one-time use, sterile water is the answer.
