Bacteriostatic Water FAQ: Uses & Storage

Bacteriostatic water is one of the most common questions we get from people researching peptides, and there is a lot of vague information out there. This FAQ gives clear, accurate answers to the questions that come up most often, written for a Canadian audience.

What is bacteriostatic water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol, typically around 0.9%, added as a bacteriostatic preservative. The term “bacteriostatic” means the additive inhibits the growth of bacteria rather than killing them outright. That preservative is the single feature that sets it apart from plain sterile water.

What is it used for?

In a laboratory context it is used as a diluent to reconstitute lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides and other powdered compounds. The benzyl alcohol allows the same vial to be accessed more than once over a period of time without the solution supporting bacterial growth between uses, which is why it is preferred over single-use sterile water for compounds that are worked with gradually.

How is it different from sterile water?

Both are sterile at the point of manufacture. The difference is the preservative. Sterile water contains nothing but water and is intended for a single use, because once opened it has no defence against contamination. Does it need to be refrigerated?

An unopened vial is generally stored at controlled room temperature, out of direct light, per the manufacturer’s labelling. After opening, refrigeration is commonly recommended to extend usable life and slow any degradation. Always defer to the specific product’s labelled storage instructions rather than a general rule.

How long does it last after opening?

A frequently cited figure for an opened vial is up to around 28 days when stored properly, though this depends on the manufacturer and storage conditions. Can you tell if it has gone bad?

Discard any vial that shows cloudiness, particulate matter, discoloration, or that has passed its labelled date or usable window. Clear appearance is not a guarantee of quality, but visible changes are a definite reason to stop using it.

Common questions, quick answers

  • Is it the same as saline? No. Saline contains sodium chloride and no benzyl alcohol; it is a different solution with different properties.
  • Can it be frozen? Freezing is generally not recommended, as it is unnecessary and can affect the container.
  • Does the preservative matter? Yes. The benzyl alcohol is the whole reason bacteriostatic water can be accessed multiple times, and it is also why it is not suitable for every application.
  • Where is it sold? It is stocked by pharmacies and laboratory suppliers.
