How to Read a Janoshik COA for Peptides

Janoshik Analytical is one of the most widely referenced independent testing labs in the peptide space, and its certificate of analysis (COA) shows up in a lot of purchasing decisions. Knowing how to read one, and how to confirm it is genuine, lets you evaluate a supplier’s material on evidence rather than reputation. Here is what a Janoshik COA contains and how to interpret it.

What a COA is for

A certificate of analysis is a lab’s record of what it measured in a specific sample. A good peptide COA answers three questions: is this the right molecule, how pure is it, and how much is in the vial. A third-party COA from an independent lab carries more weight than an in-house claim because the lab has no stake in the result.

The header: identity and traceability

Start at the top. A Janoshik COA lists the sample name or compound, a report or order number, and the date of analysis. The report number is what makes the document traceable and verifiable. Keep it: it is how you check the certificate against the lab’s own records later.

Purity by HPLC

The purity figure is measured by HPLC and expressed as a percentage. As on any HPLC report, that number is the area percent of the main peak relative to all peaks detected. Many certificates include the chromatogram itself, so you can see the main peak and any impurities rather than trusting the summary line. A clean chromatogram with a dominant, symmetrical main peak backs up a high purity number.

Identity by mass spectrometry

Purity alone does not tell you the vial contains the peptide you ordered, only that whatever is inside is mostly one thing. That is why a proper COA also reports mass spectrometry. The measured mass is compared against the expected molecular mass of the target peptide. When the observed mass matches the theoretical mass, identity is confirmed. Together, HPLC and mass spec answer both the “how pure” and “what is it” questions.

Quantity testing

Some Janoshik reports include a quantity or content test, which measures how many milligrams of peptide are actually in the vial versus what the label claims. This matters because an underfilled vial effectively raises your true cost per milligram. If a quantity test is present, compare the measured amount to the labelled amount.

Spotting a fake or mismatched COA

Because COAs influence sales, some are edited or reused. Watch for these signs:

  • The compound or report number on the COA does not match the product you are buying.
  • The date is old and generic, reused across many different products.
  • The chromatogram is missing, blurry, or clearly cropped.
  • The numbers look too clean, with no impurity peaks at all.

The strongest check is verification: a genuine Janoshik report can be confirmed against the lab’s records using its report number. A supplier confident in its testing will happily point you to the right lot document.
